MEIS in Germany Part 3: Steinberg, Electronic Music History, Planetarium

MEIS Study Abroad students at Steinberg's headquarters
We were able to visit the headquarters of Steinberg as they moved into their new headquarters. They were very kind to allow us to visit during what was surely a stressful time, but nonetheless they extended a warm welcome. We took a tour of the new "digs" and learned about the technology: from continuous integration to overcoming real-time issues. The expertise of the technicians ranges from helping implement AES-31 workstation exchanges to 3D audio, VST, and Scrum project management strategies. Steinberg is also working with Dolby's Atmos (R) technology, with one advantage being that there is not a limitation on bus channels / stems / bed channels. Nuendo is more popular in Europe than the US, due in part to the large number of movies that are dubbed in foreign languages: there are a a lot of customers for the ADR developer kit for Nuendo.

"Good Vibrations" exhibit
At the State Institute for Music Research, (Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung), the "Good Vibrations" exhibit featured early electronic music technology. Pictured here is the "Special Purpose Tape Recorder" from Hugh Le Cain (1955) which could play 10 tape loops at the same time.

At the same exhibition, student Drew Apple and Kurt Gunselman interact with more modern machines, such as the Moog "Theremini" and Native Instruments' "Maschine".

A trip to the Hamburg Planetarium was revelatory: not only does the facility feature over 48 loudspeakers, but we have several connections with Denver. Our host, Sascha Kriegel, has been involved with Gates Planetarium and Dan Neafus' "IMERSA" summits (conferences about immersive video and audio). And the software they are using was developed by Rene Rodigast at Fraunhofer, with whom I authored a paper in 2010.
